Hungry for God: You are blessed
Matt. 5:6
New Revised Standard Version: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
The Message: You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.
The world is a mess – and we tragically have helped make the mess the world is in. The mess is not just on the headline grabbing level, it is also on the neighbourhood and the family level. It is everywhere we look – and it is in us. We know only too well the cry of Paul “For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.” (Romans 7:15).
We want to live differently; we want the world to be a different place. But we have lived long enough to know that all the striving and hard work of human beings will not fix things. Nothing short of God coming to fix things will address the problems of our world, will address the craving for right and truth, for peace and grace to flow.
Jesus invites us to stay hungry for the transformation of our lives, to keep on craving a different world, to not be satisfied with anything less than the full reign of God. When we are hungry, sometimes we do the fast-food thing because it is quick and easy. Jesus invites us to not be satisfied with quick or easy solutions to the challenges of our lives or the problems of our world. The real answers to the challenges of our world do not come as quick fixes, but as lasting transformation. It is worth staying hungry rather than settling for something that is just a short-term fix.
PRAYER:
Lord, help us stay hungry for your kingdom, for your rule in our world. Give us the discipline to not be satisfied with anything less than your kingdom. We pray for your kingdom to come, for your will to be done, for your glory to be seen. Make it so, Lord Jesus, make it so. Amen.
