Hope past hope’s conceiving - Day 6
I Corinthians 2:6-10
6 Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. 7 But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 But, as it is written,
“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the human heart conceived,
what God has prepared for those who love him”—
10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
A theme has run through the passages we have looked at this week. Human power is not forever. The power of darkness is not forever. The wisdom that human beings use, the wisdom that says “might makes right”, “look after #1”, “win at all costs”, “never show weakness” and so on – that kind of wisdom will be broken. For that wisdom fails to understand that “the fear (awe, reverence) of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” (Ps. 11:10; Prov. 9:10, 15:33)
The wisdom of this age will be broken by the secret and hidden wisdom of God, a wisdom that has stood before time was. A wisdom that declares that humility and meekness are strength, that dying is the path way to life, that losing is the way to victory. This wisdom was revealed in Jesus Christ who showed us that there is a different way, a way that is so unexpected that it has been overlooked and ignored, ridiculed and rejected.
But this ignored, overlooked, rejected way is the way in which God has brought the reign of God into being. For this is the way that leads to a hope and a glory that is beyond anything that any human heart or mind has hoped for or conceived as possible. A hope past hope’s conceiving. God will bring about a glory and a wonder – a transformation and a new thing beyond anything which we can imagine. Human language breaks down, unable to describe the wonder that God has prepared, a wonder that will be revealed when Christ will come again.
PRAYER:
Lord God, the wisdom of this world is loud and it distracts us from living by your wisdom. The wisdom you invite us to follow is life giving and brings hope into being in the world, thank you for it, teach us to shape our lives around your wisdom which is being revealed in the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
